OUR STORY

Intermarket Guest Amenities has successfully serviced the hospitality industry for over 40 years. In 2008, the business, which at the time supplied a small range of hotel amenities and a wider range of bar accessories was bought over by entrepreneur, Ian Smith. Ian had founded several very successful manufacturing enterprises in the plastics and steel industries and used his experience to improve the production processes at Intermarket and start up it’s manufacturing division. Ian’s involvement streamlined the business but it was only when he invited his daughter, Megan to Intermarket that the company truly transformed. 

After graduating from the University of Cape Town with a degree in Biochemistry and a Post-Graduate in Business Management, majoring in Marketing, Megan joined her father at Intermarket and applied what she had learned during her studies.

“With a combination of the entrepreneurial spirit that I inherited from my Dad, a fearless attitude, and young energy, I poured myself into Intermarket and revamped the business’s look & feel, operational processes, service delivery and product offering. I didn’t think I was doing anything too incredible as I was simply listening to what our customers wanted and did that. And within 2 years, we had doubled our turnover and were making great profit.”

Together, Ian and Megan commissioned Intermarket’s soap manufacturing plant in 2012, which was to be the business’s next great stepping stone and competitive edge in the hospitality market. Shortly thereafter, Megan took over management of Intermarket and has continued to grow and develop its product offering, services and brand. Intermarket has proven to be a consistently steadfast, reliable and successful manufacturer and distributor of quality guest amenities to the hotel, guest house and AirBnB market ever since. 


Today, Ian is still a shareholder at Intermarket and pops in from time to time to check on things but Megan and her wonderful, dedicated team are continuously strategising on how to take Intermarket the best supplier of guest amenities and host solutions in South Africa.

That not only means producing a good quality product, but ensuring all upstream processes and always running smoothly for optimal stock holding. We pride ourselves on always being able to support out clients as the hospitalty industry is so busy and cutthroat, it’s our job to ensure our clients always have reliable stock on time, every time and we do it with a smile because we truly love what we do.”
